Winter Structures – Testwood is a photopolymer gravure etching. I have been using this intaglio printmaking technique since 2016. It can be very frustrating, but equally delightful.
Photo gravure can reproduce a tonal photograph on a metal plate with excellent results. Hand drawn imagery or a combination of both can also be used.
Once the plate is etched, it is then printed by the intaglio process on an etching press on to damp high quality hand made paper.
This print is a mixture of a manmade structure and natural form. I grew up in Yorkshire in a mining town and I was surrounded by industry on one hand and the nearness of the moors and countryside on the other. Pylons are part of our landscape and combined with trees and other natural forms make very striking images.
I always take my camera and use my phone to capture images, these are used back in the studio together with my drawings/painting completed in situ.
