Sea 1 is a multi layered monotype print. It is a response to a storm approaching the Devon coast near Seaton East Devon. Three monotypes are in this series and are all of the same coast and inspired by the same day’s weather.
Various monotype techniques are used when creating artwork. A simplified image is drawn and then reversed so that it is the correct way round. The palest colours are laid down first and each layer is registered before printing. The ghost image left on the plate as it helps to colour and draw in the next layer with accuracy. A wide variety of mark making tools are used to add colour and form.
I always take my camera and use my phone to capture images, these are used back in the studio together with my drawings/painting completed in situ.
I also write detailed notes overtime I print so that mistakes can be minimised. These are not kept in my sketchbook as they would be become lost amongst the drawings, but kept in A4/A5 notebooks and each printing session dated so I can easily find information.
