Looking to the Island
Acrylic painting on canvas
Canvas size: 60 cm x 50 cm
‘Looking to the Island’ was painted in my studio at home in rural Hampshire. I use my sketchbook drawings and paintings completed ‘plein air’ together with photographs taken at the same time. I love layering virtually transparent paint on textured grounds and gradually building layers of both density and translucency.
We have a little sailing dinghy at Keyhaven and this area inspires much of my work. I am constantly inspired by the ever-moving coastline of mudflats, marshes and waterways, the ebb and flow of the tide and the transient land that is visible for only part of the day.
My work can be observational, abstract or an immediate response to the visual stimulus of the view. My intention is that the viewer senses some of the emotion that inspired me to create the work.
