With over 30 years experience as a textile designer working both with major manufacturers and creating her own designs, Jan began her career at Winchester School of Art studying print, weave and knit at BA level. Since returning to the UK after living in the West Indies Jan began designing for print. Ironically many of her designs have since been sold for weave, but much of her artwork has been used on other applications including (but not limited to!) ceramics, rugs, flooring, bed linen, wallpaper and fashion fabrics. Jan usually creates designs by hand and then uses CAD (digital technology).
As a textile designer, Jan has been commissioned to create bespoke designs for both companies and individual clients looking for a more custom-feel to their interior design projects. Upon enquiry, Jan will discuss your requirements and create image boards that demonstrate colours, textures, patterns and imagery that reflect the client’s brief. From these boards, initial design ideas are then drawn up - once the designs are finalised, Jan will create the final artwork. Explore examples of Jan’s commissioned textile work below.
Jan’s artistic services can also be commissioned in a similar way whether you are looking for book illustrations, logo artwork or card designs. Examples of Jan’s commissioned artwork can be found here.
If you are interested in commissioning either design work or artwork please contact Jan to discuss your project for quotes and timescales.
Here are just a few examples of types of commission work that have been undertaken.
Following on from this initial commission Jan was asked to design some of the fabrics for Lengishu. Jan worked as part of Sherwood + Morgan and she created two designs based on medallion and lattice designs which reflected the North African influence still found in parts of Kenya. Jan also designed a trail design which was coloured to match the interior scheme at Lengishu.
Chalk Stream Fish was originally designed for a client in Hampshire they wanted a design to reflect the client's love of fly fishing. Jan combined brown trout, grayling, mayfly and blue winged olives.
Below are few exampled of artwork commissions, the images starting on the left show a watercolour painting of Testwood Lakes a monotype print of the marshes at Keyhaven in the evening light and another watercolour again of the marshes at Keyhaven looking over to the Isle of Wight.
Jan has a comprehensive library of designs that have been sold for textiles, rugs, wallpaper, bedlinen and other products for interiors.
Jan has also illustrated books, created artwork for businesses as diverse as pubs and web design companies. Quite often an art or illustration commission has led to further development work e.g. adding Christmas cards, thank you cards or additional artwork.
