Jan Sherwood, photo, artist, designer, printmaker

Jan has over 30 years experience as a textile designer working both with major manufacturers and creating her own designs. Jan began her career at Winchester School of Art studying print, weave and knit at BA level and many of her designs have been sold for weave as well as print and a variety of other applications including (but not limited to!) ceramics, rugs, flooring, bed linen, wallpaper and fashion fabrics. She usually designs by hand and then uses CAD at which she has had over two decades of experience. Jan combines both methods within her work not just as a designer, but also in her printmaking and painting.

She has also lectured at degree level at  Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College for nine years and as a visiting professional at her alma mater Winchester School of Art Masters course. She gained Qualified Teacher Status at Reading University and taught at secondary level full time for a few years and both secondary and sixth form level part-time so that more time could be devoted to creating her own work. ’The Creativity Box’ was launched in 2015 selling ranges of cards from her own designs, paintings and prints. Jan renamed her business to Jan Sherwood Studio in early 2020 to acknowledge that everything on the website was her own creation.

Jan is now a full-time designer, printmaker and artist, designing fabrics, with a fledgeling company Sherwood + Morgan with friend and interior designer, Eve Morgan. The company’s emphasis is on combining traditional illustration and hand drawing with cutting edge digital printing technology to produce traditional fabrics with a contemporary twist.

Jan can be commissioned directly by either individuals or companies to create bespoke designs or artwork.

The inspiration for her printmaking and painting is transient shadows of natural forms, the ever-moving coastline of mudflats, marshes and waterways. Landscape, rocks, cliffs, moorland, flowers, trees and the wildlife that inhabits these environments.
