Inspirations behind Jan’s artwork are transient shadows of natural forms, the ever-moving coastline of mudflats, marshes and waterways. Landscape, rocks, cliffs, moorland, flowers, trees and the wildlife that inhabits these environments also play a large role in Jan’s delightful art and design work.
Jan lectured at degree level at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College for nine years and as a visiting professional at her alma mater Winchester School of Art Masters course.
Jan gained Qualified Teacher Status at Reading University, and taught at secondary level full time for a few years at both secondary and sixth form level part-time; this meant more time could be devoted to creating her design own work.
‘The Creativity Box’ was launched in 2015 selling ranges of cards from her own designs collection, paintings and prints. Soon after, Jan rebranded her business to Jan Sherwood Studio in early 2020 to acknowledge that everything on the website was her very own creation.
Now a full-time designer, artist Jan worked designing fabrics with a fledgeling company Sherwood + Morgan with friend and interior designer, Eve Morgan from 2017 until early 2021. The company’s emphasis was on combining traditional illustration and hand drawing with cutting edge digital printing technology to produce traditional fabrics with a contemporary twist. Jan is now a completely independent designer again working from her studio in rural Hampshire.
In July 2020, Jan became the director of Badger Press, (Badger Arts CIC) in Bishop's Waltham. Badger Press is a printmaking studio, runs weekend and day courses in all aspects of printmaking.
It is also an 'Open Access' studio and is available for hire to experienced printmakers provided they are capable of working independently and have completed a studio induction with us.
